The short version

summeriser. is a Chrome extension that reads the page you are on and uses an AI model to write a summary, answer questions about it, and generate quizzes from it.

We hold no accounts and keep no database of your content. But the text of the page you summarise does leave your browser: it is sent to Google's Gemini API to be processed.

By using summeriser. you are also agreeing to Google's terms. Because every summary is generated by Gemini, your use of this extension is subject to the Google Privacy Policy and the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service, in addition to this policy. Section 05 explains what that means in practice.

What we send

Data is transmitted only when you click Summarize, ask a question, or generate a quiz. Nothing is sent while you are simply browsing.

  • The extracted text of the current page — article body, PDF text, or video transcript
  • Your settings for summary length and reply length
  • Questions you type into the Q&A tab
  • A random 32-character install token, used only to enforce rate limits

All of it travels over HTTPS.

What we never send

  • Your name, email, or account details — there are no accounts
  • Your browsing history, or the URLs of pages you did not summarise
  • Cookies, advertising identifiers, or browser fingerprints
  • Analytics or usage telemetry of any kind
  • Payment details — the extension is free and takes no payments

How it works

A content script extracts the visible text of the page entirely within your browser. That text is sent to our proxy running on Cloudflare Workers, which attaches our API key — the key never reaches your browser — and forwards the request to the Gemini API. The response is returned straight to the extension popup.

Our Worker holds each request in memory and writes none of your content to storage. The only thing it stores is a request counter, keyed to a hash of your install token and IP address, so rate limits can be enforced. That counter expires within two hours.

Gemini and Google

Every summary, answer and quiz is generated by Google's Gemini API. Google therefore receives the page text you submit, and processes it under its own terms rather than ours.

On the free tier, Google may use your content to improve its products. summeriser. currently runs on Gemini's free tier. Google's published terms state that prompts and responses on that tier may be used to improve their services, and that a subset of content is reviewed by human annotators. Paid Gemini tiers do not do this; the free tier does.

The practical consequence is simple: treat anything you summarise as though a person at Google could read it. That is perfectly fine for a news article, a public PDF, or a YouTube transcript. It is not appropriate for a contract, a medical record, a private work document, or anything covered by an NDA.

By installing and using summeriser. you agree that your use of the AI features is also governed by the Google Privacy Policy and the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service. If you do not accept those terms, please do not use the extension.

Third parties

The extension depends on the following services to process a request. There are no others.

  • Google (Gemini API) — generates every summary, answer and quiz. Free-tier data handling as described in section 05. Privacy policy
  • Cloudflare Workers — runs our proxy, which holds the API key. Privacy policy
  • Groq — a standby model provider, used only when Google is unavailable. Groq states that it does not train on API content.

We do not share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or analytics providers.

Local storage

The extension uses Chrome's storage API to keep your theme choice, summary length and reply length on your device, along with the random install token generated once at install.

None of this identifies you. Nothing in local storage is transmitted except the install token, which exists purely so that one user cannot exhaust the shared quota. Removing the extension deletes all of it; you can also clear it from Chrome's extension settings at any time.

Children

summeriser. is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly accept content from them.

If you believe a child has submitted content through the extension, email us at the address below and we will act on it.

Changes

We may update this policy to reflect changes in how the extension works, or for legal and operational reasons. When we do, the effective date at the top of this page changes with it.

Material changes to how your data is handled — a new model provider, or different data-retention terms — will be noted here before they take effect, not after. Continued use following an update means you accept the revised policy.
